Assessing the performance of biogas plants with multi-criteria and data envelopment analysis

چکیده
This paper performs an assessment of 41 agricultural biogas plants located in Austria to determine their relative performance in terms of economic, environmental, and social criteria and corresponding indicators. The comparison of these renewable energy conversion plants is based on two complementary analyses. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) was conducted to provide measures of radial efficiency relative to the observed frontier of production possibilities. Multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA), using the IRIS/ ELECTRE TRI methodology, was conducted to obtain a different perspective on the results, and as a tool that would enable to incorporate managerial preferences easily. To be able to use IRIS while keeping the spirit behind DEA, the evaluation criteria were defined as different output/input efficiency ratios, and no information about criteria weights was introduced at the outset. The results suggest that MCDA, and the use of IRIS in particular, constitutes a useful approach that can be applied in a complementary way to

Multi-Criteria versus Data Envelopment Analysis for Assessing the Performance of Biogas Plants
This paper compares multi-criteria decision aiding (MCDA) and data envelopment analysis (DEA) approaches for assessing renewable energy plants, in order to determine their performance in terms of economic, environmental, and social criteria and indicators. The case is for a dataset of 41 agricultural biogas plants in Austria using anaerobic digestion. The results indicate that MCDA constitutes ...
متن کاملAn extended of multiple criteria data envelopment analysis models for ratio data
One of the problems of the data envelopment analysis traditional models in the multiple form that is the weights corresponding to certain inputs and outputs are considered zero in the calculation of efficiency and this means that not all input and output components are utilized for the evaluation of efficiency, as some are ignored. The above issue causes the efficiency score of the under evalua...
متن کاملShapley value-based multi-objective data envelopment analysis application for assessing academic efficiency of university departments
This paper adopts a modified approach of data envelopment analysis (DEA) to measure the academic efficiency of university departments. In real-world case studies, conventional DEA models often identify too many decision-making units (DMUs) as efficient. This occurs when the number of DMUs under evaluation is not large enough compared to the total number of decision variables. To overcome this l...
متن کاملA Common Weight Multi-criteria Decision analysis-data Envelopment Analysis Approach with Assurance Region for Weight Derivation from Pairwise Comparison Matrices
Deriving weights from a pairwise comparison matrix (PCM) is a subject for which a wide range of methods have ever been presented. This paper proposes a common weight multi criteria decision analysis-data envelopment analysis (MCDA-DEA) approach with assurance region for weight derivation from a PCM. The proposed model has several merits over the competing approaches and removes the drawbacks of...
متن کاملEvaluating the Efficiency of Firms with Negative Data in Multi-Period Systems: An Application to Bank Data
Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a mathematical technique to evaluate the performance of firms with multiple inputs and outputs. In conventional DEA models, the efficiency scores of Decision Making Units (DMUs) with non-negative inputs and outputs are evaluated in a special period of time. However, in the real world there are situations wherein performance of firms must be evaluated in multip...
